Novodevichi Convent was founded in 1524 by Grand Duke Vasili III (the father of Ivan the Terrible) to honor the recapture of the old Russian town of Smolensk (1514). The Convent served as an important link in the defensive structure of Moscow monasteries-guards. The territory of the convent is surrounded with brick walls (the end of XVII century) with 12 towers. The cemetery is located on the territory of the convent, many famous people of Russia are buried there. |
