On the place of the present Bolshoi Theatre the Peter theatre was open, but it burned down in 1805. 20 years later a new theatre was constructed on the same place under the project of Bowe and Mikhailova. However it shared the same fate. The remaining walls and colonnade were used to erect a new building, which was considerably rebuilt by Khavos in 1856. Many glorious pages of history of Russian musical and ballet art are inextricably related with the Bolshoi Theatre. The auditorium of the theatre contains 2000 people. |
